As the Republican Spokesperson for the House Personnel and Pensions Committee State Representative Mark Batinick led an important debate on a piece of legislation that would change the downstate firefighter pension code. The legislation, SB37, mandates downstate fire districts pay additional costs for employing part-time firefighters that already work full-time elsewhere. Representative Batinick requested an additional amendment be brought forward under SB37, to make it clearer just how much the costs would be and how they would be distributed.
“We understand there is a liability between the secondary fire department and the full time department but the numbers you gave in the amendment are arbitrary,” said Rep. Batinick. “We just think they should be the actuarial costs for disability and occupational disease.”
