Yesterday, Governor JB Pritzker signed legislation to raise the minimum salary for educators to $40,000 by the 2023-2024 school year. State Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) supported the initiative, HB2078.
“Illinois is currently in the middle of a teacher shortage,” Batinick said. “A main driver of this shortage is the low pay and the high demands related to the field especially in rural areas of our state where the minimum salary is as low as $27,000.”
In addition to raising the minimum salary, salaries will be adjusted equal to the percentage of the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, which is published yearly by the U.S. Department of Labor.
HB2078 passed the House of Representatives 81-30 on June 1.
