Batinick on Democratic “Transparency” in Redistricting Process: “What’s Happening Behind that Door is Not Democracy.”

SPRINGFIELD – State Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) spoke at a press conference on Thursday with House Redistricting Committee Republican Spokesperson Tim Butler (R-Springfield), Rep. Avery Bourne (R-Morrisonville), Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon), and Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) outside the Democrat Map Room in the Stratton Office Building among mounds of old furniture.

“When I saw the WCIA report last night on this room, I actually at first laughed, then I cried because what’s happening behind that door is not democracy,” said Rep. Batinick. “You know who agrees with me? President Barack Obama. He spoke to the Illinois General Assembly in 2016 about how gerrymandering is bad for the country and the state. I call on my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to join us and the former President and stop what’s happening behind that door.”

Rep. Batinick has previously called for redistricting reform in January 2020 following Governor Pritzker’s State of the State Address. Thursday’s press conference followed a report from WCIA detailing the Democrat Map Room. The report can be viewed online here.
